    Dear Parents,

    We hope this update continues to find you and your family well.  We know that this is a stressful time for our children, parents, and staff and that unplanned school closures can create additional challenges.  We are striving to provide you with the most current information as it becomes available to us and appreciate your patience as guidelines and mandates are changing daily.  As in our previous communications regarding the status of school during the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, we continue to be in close contact with the Alachua County Health Department, Center for Disease Control, Florida Department of Education, and governor’s office.  It can be very confusing when there is conflicting information being reported in the news and by various agencies, so please be aware that while we have been following the guidelines of the CDC, local/state/federal government mandates, including those from the FDOE as they pertain to private schools, supersede CDC recommendations and we must adhere to these mandates.

    Here is what we can tell you:

    As of 3/17/2020 Governor DeSantis, the Department of Education, and Commissioner Corcoran are using executive authority to support the Florida Division of Emergency Management.  As such,  Effective immediately, all public and private K-12 schools are closed through April 15, 2020.  It is possible that date may change again, depending on the advice of the government and medical professionals.

    • Schools are encouraged to operate virtually or through other non-classroom-based means to the greatest extent possible to implement distance learning.
    • Schools should be prepared to extend their educational calendars through June 30, 2020, to the extent feasible and necessary.  Instructional hours may be reduced to accommodate for closures. 

    *Please note that engaging in MMS Distance Learning does qualify for instructional time, so at this time there is no plan to extend the academic calendar. 

    Again, this may change, depending on additional restrictions or mandates.

    • All remaining assessments for school readiness, voluntary prekindergarten, and K-12 assessments are cancelled for the 2019-2020 school year.
    • School readiness and prekindergarten programs are strongly recommended to adhere to the CDC’s guidance for higher-risk populations by limiting groups to no more than 10 people convened in a single occupied space.What does all of this mean for MMS?
    • As an administrative team, we have been meeting daily to make the best decisions for MMS, including alternate planning.
    • The teachers have been working around the clock to create a dynamic Distance Learning Plan to ensure instructional time is not lost.
    • You will receive an updated communication from the school on Friday, March 20, that will include links to individual teacher communications regarding an instructional plan for the classroom.  These letters are important to review because they will explain the primary mode of communication between you and the teacher.  They may also contain suggestions for optional activities or resources you can utilize next week during Spring Break.  
    • Specific lessons and assignments will be sent out to you each week, beginning the week of March 30th.  More than anything, we want our families to use this next week as it was intended, to spend time with one another and to remain safe and well.  Please also refer to the update on March 16th, which provided some resources and tips.

    We will continue to update you as we move forward.  There are still more questions than answers, but we are making all decisions based on the information we have available and in the best interest of our students and staff.
